Gun control
For years, debate concerning gun control in the US as the best solution for Americans has been met with mixed outcomes forming two distinct sides. Those in support of gun control and those who against gun control. Recent school shootings in several states in the US have intensified the debate with many interest groups supporting gun control. However, gun control is not the best solution because banning guns will not deter people to misuse guns. In addition, several gun owners argue that owning guns is important because guns protect them from people with bad intentions. There are several reasons for owning a gun.
Existing laws have done little to minimize misuse of guns. Even though gun control is perceived as the best solution to reduce crime and murder. Criminals will still use other means to commit crimes. Even though two-thirds of homicides cases are associated with gun use, criminals use knives and other dangerous weapons to kill their victims. California is among the many states with the highest rates of homicide that is 39 percent higher than the national crime statistics. In the southern part of California, crime is on the increase despite the state banning sales of handguns. All these facts prove that gun control is not the best solution to solve crime issues in the US.
Preventing crime means cracking down those people who misuse guns without any justifiable reasons instead of focusing on the availability of guns. The fact remains that even if we ban guns, crime will still occur, criminals will use other weapons. Banning guns would only mean taking them away from honest people and giving it to criminals who will take advantage of unarmed citizens. Guns can be used in positive ways, including hunting and for self-defense. Many people view guns the only tool that separates them from death.
When people are well educated on how to use guns like other dangerous weapons safely, people will have the same respect for guns like other dangerous weapons. Many people own guns, but at times fall into the hands of the wrong people. Therefore, people need to be taught about the benefits and the dangers of misusing guns. Research studies show that one of the most common reasons people own guns is for self-defense. Handguns are used by more than 500,000 million citizens annually for self-defense. More than 66 recent of people interviewed who keep guns at home stated that protection is the main reason for buying a gun.
I believe that anything if misused can be dangerous, the same applies to guns. Guns are like others tools that have numerous benefits to the owners; banning guns would mean limiting citizens from exercising their freedom because they will be disadvantaged by the fact that they cannot defend themselves from people who pose a threat to them. A gun is a tool like any other tools with several benefits. Many citizens enjoy using guns for leisure activities like hunting. The banning of guns means limiting certain activities and violating human freedom. If guns are restricted, many people will become vulnerable to attack. The government should not leave its citizens vulnerable to attack, but instead, permit people to own guns. Gun control laws will still make criminal laces guns and attack innocent people. Gun control is not a good solution for our country.
