The modern world demands education as one of the most crucial aspects of development in any country. Education promotes the economy because a high rate of educated people results in increased income hence a boost to the financial state of a country. Education is also important in the social sector since it creates open-minded people who are able to stop certain social discriminations such as teenage marriages.
Education in India has undergone significant development over decades since the period of independence. However, one would be right to state that there is no education in India. There is still a significantly large portion of the Indian population which is illiterate as a result of poverty. Most parents cannot afford basic needs for their children to comfortably attend school. The government supports education to all children through the provision of free services such as books, uniforms, and meals. However, these services are still not enough to help children access education hence most of them end up missing classes. There is a great need for the development of the other schemes which can help children access education.
In addition, most people in India tend to be retrogressive in regards to education matters. The poor urban and rural areas consist of many people who either ignore or do not realize the positive impacts of education to the young generation. These group of people, therefore, do not send their children to school. The most affected gender is the girl children since parents assume they do not require education in their lives. These backward beliefs act as main obstacles to the development of children, families and the whole country. There is an urgent need to encourage people in the affected regions to send children to school through the creation of awareness.
Closely related to the retrogressive behavior is insufficient facilities for education in the rural areas. Most rural areas do not have a school or if there is one, then it is located far away. The long distance discourages parents from sending children, who have to walk on foot, to the schools. The large population of India also contributes to the insufficiency of facilities to facilitate education. Most classrooms are so crowded that one teacher cannot attend to every child and understand their educational needs. The government has the task to ensure emphasis is put on the development of education and increasing of funds to the sector.
Besides, the development of infrastructure is still low in rural India. Many roads to schools in the rural areas are impassable which affects learning because teachers and students find a hard time either walking, cycling or driving through. Most schools also do not have sufficient infrastructure in form of classrooms and staff offices. Teachers sit under the trees as their offices. It is also common to find children taking their classes under trees which are significantly affected during the rainy season.
Another issue affecting education in India is the poor pay to teachers and workers in public schools. The poor payment does not motivate teachers and school workers to perform their duties well. Children are therefore most affected by government failures. The government should improve job evaluation and payment of teachers through rewarding of better performance.
Education in India might seem to have developed significantly over the years but still, there is a lot missing in the sector. The many factors such as poverty, inadequate facilities, government failure and poor culture contribute to the lack of education. Various efforts should be introduced by both government, stakeholders, and individuals to improve the rate of education acquisition.
