Plastic Surgery
In the current world, looks and wealth are emphasized over mannerisms and moral values. Men are attracted to beautiful ladies, and ladies too, want a perfect, handsome man. While some women are endowed with beautiful curvatures, hips to die for, and a perfect face, nose, eyes, and lips, many more women feel discontented about their physical appearance. For them, make-ups and push-up bras are part of the solution. A different, more precise route has however emerged over the past few decades: plastic surgery. This paper argues that while plastic surgery is giving people a chance to attain the look they so much desire, its drawbacks are numerous hence it is not a worthwhile solution.
Plastic or cosmetic surgery involves repairing, replacing, or reconstructing a person’s external body part or enhancing the body parts through cosmetic procedures to attain the desired look. The late famous rock and pop star Michael Jackson brought plastic surgery to the attention of masses with his desire to “look white” and attain the nose of a white man. The masses followed suit.
According to the proponents of cosmetic surgery, it enhances one’s physical appearance, enabling him or her to achieve a look they desire. A woman’s behind can be enlarged or reduced as per her desire, a nose can be straightened and lifted, and by the time one walks out of the surgery room, they are “perfect.” It enhances one’s level of confidence and sense of vitality, which boosts self-esteem. In addition, people who have deformities in one or more parts of the body can undergo an operation to rectify their outlook. Such a case is justifiable. Also, wealthy people have the resources to fund as many cosmetic surgery operations as possible. In this regard, plastic surgery is an option on the table for them as they can afford to pay.
However, despite the few benefits highlighted above, the drawbacks of plastic surgery are copious and severe, rendering it an unviable option. First, it is an extremely expensive procedure that only the wealthy can afford. A single surgery procedure ranges from tens to hundreds of thousands of dollars. For the working class, this is but a dream.
Furthermore, the desire to change one’s appearance can be quite addictive. After one has acquired a new and supposedly perfect nose, he might as well realize that all his years, his legs were not perfect and need to be adjusted too! He ends up with a reconstructed pair! It is for this reason that some clients request for “revisions” after realizing that their reconstructed body part is not what they actually expected or that people are not giving the expected compliments, hence they demand the old or previous body organ. Furthermore, such operations require regular maintenance hence it becomes necessary to undergo a series of operations.
Numerous health concerns are associated with plastic surgery. In some cases, the reconstructed parts are not compatible with the rest of the body, resulting in health complications. Moreover, such procedures are merely an illusion. In their desire to remain young, some old people opt for plastic surgery. The concepts of youthfulness and aging are but illusions and need to be embraced. Such an aged person could acquire a youthful look but his experiences and age remain unchanged!
In conclusion, people need to embrace their appearance. Plastic surgery creates a false sense of confidence but the resultant consequences and the fact that it is an extremely expensive procedure points to its redundancy. To maintain a healthy body, one merely needs to exercise regularly and consume natural foods. Ultimately, real happiness is not dependent on other people’s compliments but the discovery of one’s identity and worth.
