Movement of people from rural areas to urban areas is a major concern in the 21st century. The question whether to stay urban centers or the village is a highly debated issue. A report by The United Nation Statistics shows that the number of city dwellers exceeds rural population. Although towns are stuffed, mankind fancies modernized lifestyle.
People in the modern era especially the younger generation prefer living in the city than reside in rural areas. Just as it comprises of a multitude of people, streets, buildings, a set of political, economic, and social institutions, it is considered a library of ideas. The diversified nature of cities provides dependable role models that the young emulate. Urban areas present diverse opportunities for individual growth and development due to increased professional contact. Cities are characterized by developed infrastructure enhancing efficient trade. The beauty of security which is always beefed up enhances a 24-hour economy. Its expensive nature motivates inhabitants to work extra harder to meet their bills.
As beautiful as city life may seem, it comes with certain challenges. Since cities are highly industrialized, they are characterized by overpopulation which puts stress on scarce resources such as housing, social amenities, and recreational facilities. Statistics from US Environmental Agency confirm that half of the world’s pollution is courtesy of industry, with four percent deaths in the United States, are attributed to air pollution. Fumes emitted from industries and poorly disposed waste make most towns unbearable to live. This leads to contraction of diseases associated with the respiratory system, poor drainage resulting from blockage which further causes flooding during the rainy seasons. Hooting from cars, heavy traffic, and congestion of people in some public places makes life in the city unpleasant. However, proper regulations have been put to minimize these drawbacks.

On the offensive, there are merits and demerits associated with the countryside. It possesses a serene environment that is rare in the hustle-bustle nature of towns. The magnificent view of the scenery of the countryside is highly recommendable. Additionally, the environment contains clean air, and less noise, therefore, minimal pollution. Since farming is practiced, one is assured of easy access to a variety of vegetables and fruits at a cheaper cost. Residence in rural areas is often permanent with minimal movements hence fostering close social ties between inhabitants.
Although remarkable, some drawbacks exist. Life is dull and monotonous with obvious traditional entertainment. Rural dwellers are committed to shielding their traditional practices and beliefs. Although this seems beautiful, some cultures undermine the well-being of some dwellers; such practices may include wife inheritance, child preference, and female genital mutilation. Nevertheless, village dwellers are always reluctant to change; this, however, attracts backwardness and stagnation. Villages are highly marginalized limiting their access to valuable information essential for the wellbeing of its inhabitants. The nature of the countryside creates unnecessary comfort zone that hampers development.
In conclusion, as hard to say certain lifestyle is more honorable than another, but, basing on historical evidence on the road to civilization, it is in towns were great ideas generated. Artistic pursuits and education and research mostly take place in urban areas. Urban life is prettier than rural life. Are there challenges, yes, but do not forget that majority of the political elites reside in the metropolis, they always work hard to ensure that the shortcomings associated with city life are minimized. I firmly believe that for any challenge in the city, there is an opportunity. These challenges aid in creative and critical thinking of an individual. Furthermore, individuals learn to be responsible and independent unlike in rural areas where responsibility is communal.
