Social Problems Among College Students (Essay Sample)

Social Problems Affecting Students

There is a host of problems that bedevils the students when they join the university or college for the first time. This is a new environment that calls for new beginnings for all the freshmen. Many at times, these freshmen tend to be isolated from the rest of the students because they are homesick.  The life in college entails class attendance, winding study hours, doubling studies with a job related assignment, and the demands of having a normal social life. There is also the issue of pressure to attain degrees at the end of the students’ college education, and as such, there is always a continuous struggle, hence the students get stressed to the level of depression. Too much pressure is not good for the health of these students. This is the reason why they try to seek solace from peers who also in the end engage in harmful activities that are detrimental to the success of the students. It is quite evident that pressure comes from all directions whenever students are in college or university. There are increasing demands from the parents, limited time, and parental pressure for those who are married, financial pressure, management of freedom and coping with the new environment when students have to live away from their parents’ comfort.

The only problem that arises from too much comfort is that it leads to wastage of time and can cause serious alcohol and drug addiction problems. In the end students end up making wrong choices that could affect their health, and risky behaviour like having unprotected sex or at times even rape, that affects their studies and careers in the end. While it is a good feeling to be loved and to love, it is important that students be conscious about it. Relationships can be time consuming and overwhelming that they affect the study routine and the ultimate student performance. In the case of breakups, relationships could lead to stress and in the end lead to depression. Whenever the students develop high levels of stress, they rarely get to access care and this could be very dilapidating to their overall health. Most of the students have insomnia because they rarely sleep at night because of the crazy assignments that have deadlines. The other reason for poor health is the proximity of the residential quarters that could expose the students to foreign communicable diseases.

Most of the students are in huge debt because of the increasing tuition rates. This, coupled up with the cost of accommodation, commuting, supplies, study materials and expensive meals becomes unmanageable for the student thus affecting the concentration levels. The college content is always very intense and demanding that it causes problems for the students. At times it could be overwhelming to the students that they are forced to opt out of the program. For those students who plan their study schedules well, this is not a big problem. This is not the case for most of students who do not prioritize their studies and as such end up wasting their time on less important activities. Most of the students in the colleges and universities face insurmountable problems of which some could be avoided but some are just inevitable.  Time management, finances, debt, health, relationships, partying and stress are some of the most common problems that they encounter while in college. If these guidelines are followed by students, then they will be able to be successful in their studies and in their daily lives. Strict adherence of these guidelines will see students avoiding the common social problems that afflict them.
