There are indeed a select group of parents who normally understand the importance of pocket money to a student. While some might just take pocket money to be for the basic usage by their children, pocket money can help a person learn on how to spend money wisely from a very early age. Poor parents might not be in a position to regularly give their children pocket money, and might only try their best to give them maybe during special events once in a while. I am lucky to have has the chance to be given pocket money by my parents quite regularly. This has in turn made me have certain things to do with my pocket money.

While the amount of pocket money I get isn’t usually fixed, I always ensure that the first thing I do with it is to save. I have learnt to set a third as the fraction to save, whichever the amount I get from my parents as pocket money. I always take this money to the bank, where I managed to open a fixed account. The fact that it is a fixed account means that I cannot withdraw from it anyhow. This strategy has made me slowly and steadily nurture the culture of saving in me. I always know that for any amount of money in my possession, a fraction of it should always be saved for either future purposes, or some investments that I might need to do later on in life.

I then usually buy some books. These are mainly documentary magazines, which I read during my leisure time. It is actually one of my hobbies. I have made it a culture of some sorts, to always purchase at least a documentary magazine, each time I get my pocket money. I find documentary magazines to be quite interesting and an important source of information. I am a lover of general knowledge. I love knowing about everything, how and why things are the way they are. Nature, politics, science, geography and such. It is always a first on my to-do list. The other bit of my pocket money goes towards purchase of snacks. In line with this, I love yogurt and ice cream.  The refrigerator at home always has a chamber specifically apportioned to me-and my yogurts.

The remainder of the money goes towards others. These include my family and friends. I use it to fulfill the promises that I might have made to any of them. I as well go out of the way to purchase some gifts for my siblings as well as my parents. They too, deserve gifts, even if they are the ones who gave me the pocket money. Such gifts and surprises for them usually fills me with satisfaction, since it makes them happy. I always feel good to see them happy. After all, what is life all about? In a nutshell, pocket money has taught me how to make wise spending decisions. I know how to handle and spend my cash, whichever amount it might be. I therefore believe that even if I get the chance to handle even larger amounts in future, I won’t be dazed.
