Education Should Be Free (Essay Sample)

Education should be free

One’s mind is boggled by the multitude definitions of “Education”. For some, education is a gateway for a bright future, for others it is money waster and not exactly necessary in order to achieve one’s goals. True to students’ experiences over the past, education is indeed highly expensive especially to those studying in top notch universities or those who study in fields that require a lot of money such as medicine, law, and hotel and restaurant management, etc.  A lot of students struggle in paying of loans and other utility and rental bills due to the high cost of their education and even when they graduate and start working, the minimum wage they earn can barely fit into their monthly budget. For years, students have been rallying for education to be free and yet there are still those who oppose them for their own reasons. Should the educational system give way and make education free or not?

A lot of students join movements in order to lessen the amount they have to pay for their education or not pay at all. They would justify that tuition is not paid for directly but it is earned through studying and hard work. Free education would also allow students to not pay off debts and can live a better life since it is a problem in the United States that the student debt is so expensive that it will take not only just a lot of time but jobs in order to pay them off, worst case scenario is that the debts aren’t paid and the students can be sent to jail or homeless. Also, with a lot of rich business men or rich people in general here and there, regardless of whether or not the government can provide scholarships, they can pay for them, some even make an educational institution with the sum of money they have. Free education also enables students to remain in their nation and instead of going to other countries who provide cheap or free education; they stay to learn in their homeland.

There are people, however, who agree that education should not be free. Monetary wise, with the economy today, it is hard to earn a decent living and to even open a savings account in the bank so it is understandable that some staff would not want this, especially those with a doctoral degree such as PhD or Dr. rer. Nat. titles whom devoted a lot of their time and effort into earning those degrees and receive just payment equal to the amount of years they spent in earning the them. Another factor is taxes, there is a high possibility that taxes will rise in order to pay for the tuition of the students since taxes are not completely just for education but also the improvement of other infrastructures of the country, free health care, etc. and with the increase in population which leads to an increase in the number of enrolling students, one must be ready to be taxed higher.

In pursuit of studies, I firmly believe that education should not be free. This is due to the teachers who make avid effort in providing the best education they can for their students; however, the government should also make amends to the highly expensive education and should be at ease with the student debts in order for the students to be able to pay their debts in a more efficient manner with the current educational system now in some countries.
