Disadvantages of Politics to Students

One of the advantages of politics is changing how a country is structured or how it works through political action and awareness. Politics can be carried out by people from all walks of life, young and old, graduates and undergraduates. In institutions of learning, politics is also used to change how the institutions operate, with student leaders getting elected in a democratic manner. It is good to have students taking part in politics because they are the future citizens of the country and should, therefore, get some primary knowledge on democracy. As much as politics has numerous advantages to students, it also has disadvantages to the same students. This paper is meant to discuss the disadvantages of politics to students.

The most obvious disadvantage of politics to students who take part in it is the neglect of their studies. When politics is introduced to the academic world, students often tend to take active parts in politics and do little in their studies. Valuable time set aside for studies is put to waste while students are dragged into political rallies and debates. As a result, they perform poorly and produce poor grades while others end up getting powerful and influential hence drop out of school to take active parts in politics.

Politics always breeds chaos. When students feel like their rights are being interfered with, they resort to fighting for their rights, which is a legitimate cause but can sometimes be chaotic and barbaric. Students also get manipulated by politicians to fight for them when things in the political arena do not favor them. During such chaotic times institutions facilities get destroyed, hundreds of students get hurt while some lose their lives. Politics is a primary reason for unrest and indiscipline in the institutions.

Politics leads to inefficiency in institutions of learning. Political interference in colleges and universities scare their respective heads from acting decisively; they, therefore, do not take actions that might be considered radical. As a result, many hours and resources are wasted during confrontations and strikes carried out by the students themselves.

As much as students are free to choose whatever political path they want to identify themselves with, some are forced to adopt identity politics. Upon joining the student body, many students are always forced to adopt political identities that they might not be comfortable with. Such identities guide their actions, ideologies, and thinking.

Politics is entirely unjust and bias. In any political setting, even in varsity and college politics, students’ ethical codes are consistently violated using lies, bribes and even assassinations. Politicians often take advantage of students’ fear and insecurity to gain more power and fame. Students, therefore, end up praising these politicians and at the same time suffering in their hands.

The violation of the students’ right not to practice politics is also a demerit caused by politics. Students desiring to retain their apolitical nature find it difficult to do so because of the influence of the powerful politicking students in the institutions. They end up being forced into politics and disturbed by all kinds of political agitations because they are helpless.

In conclusion, it is true that politics has disadvantages to students. Students get biased and sidelined by politicians; they are also engaged in chaos and forced to identify themselves with certain political identities. Students should therefore in their power, shun away from political chaos and utilize their time properly by taking their studies seriously. During their academic life, students should desist from active political participation but still get acquainted with political issues.
