Consequences of stealing

Stealing is condemned by society, stealing is viewed as uncivilized behavior that has negative consequences. There are different forms of stealing that range from theft, burglary, fraud, shoplifting among many other forms. Stealing has not only legal consequences, but also social and personal consequences. Depending on what type of theft one is engaged in, legal punishment can be severe, ranging from restitution to court ordered counseling and imprisonment. Stealing can also bring about mistrust between members of society, as the perpetrators will always be shunned by the society.

Since society prohibits stealing, those found stealing are condemned by the society and even rejected by their family members. In some parts of the world, the society puts higher prices for thieves to make up for their loss they have caused to the entire society.  The entire family is forced to work for a certain period in the store to compensate for the loss caused by the perpetrator. In such societies, stealing is a moral breach as should not form part of community standards.

Apart from just being jailed, the person caught stealing bears a permanent criminal record and is isolated from the society for his entire life.  Thus stealing has a negative consequence affecting one’s personality, and reduces the chance for one to fit in the society even after rehabilitation. In certain countries, if the perpetrator is not a permanent citizen, he will be deported back to his country of origin.  Stealing under the law is considered as a serious offense depending on the extent of the damage caused. The punishment could be harsh, especially if it involved the activity of confrontation with the victim.

Severe penalties are imposed when an offender endangers the life of the victim or anybody while in the process of stealing.  In case the offender has previously stolen or any has other criminal records, one can get harsh punishment including life in prison. One of the most common forms of stealing is shoplifting, this a deliberate attempt to take items from the shop without paying. Today, more than 27 million shoplifters have been arrested with the majority being teenagers from poor backgrounds. In the last five years, 10 million people, including adults have been caught shoplifting for various reasons.

Shoplifting affects not only the offender; it is an act that overburdened the police, and the courts and putting additional expenses to the storeowner who is forced to devise ways to stop shoplifting. Retail stores lose a lot of money each year because of shoplifting.  An offender can be convicted of shoplifting depending on the circumstances and the amount of goods or money taken. In several states, the law of parties is applicable whereby if anyone caught aiding the perpetrator is persecuted, even if he did not actually participate in stealing. In most cases, parents are called to intervene when a teenager is found stealing; the parents are forced to pay more for the products.
