COMPUTER ADDICTION

In this technological era, almost everyone is in access to an electronic device either a personal computer at home, school, internet café, etc.  Computers make work easier by completing work in the shortest time possible. They are more accurate and faster than human beings. They are highly reliable because of their efficiency and productivity. Moreover, they contain a large storage memory that is adorable hence people use them as files for their crucial documents.

Perhaps the most trending issue is computer addiction. Computer addiction is a habit that leads to extreme craving and subsequent use computer. It results in negative social, financial, emotional consequences. Addiction includes; social networking, internet compulsion, cybersex, etc. People who suffer from the computer over dependence, exhibit signs such as; offline or online computer obsession, a burning desire to be in contact with a network, and developing anxiety when one wants to use it. Also, they often feel irritated when barred from accessing it. They choose to squander their time on the computer while neglecting essential functions.

People who access the computer can be at risk of being addicts, but individuals who are, lonely, shy, easily bored, anxious, stressed, inactive, are currently addicted to a different issue or impulsive control disorder, etc., are vulnerable to computer abuse. They substitute what they lack in life with computers. Many people may think that over reliance on computer cannot have an impact on our lives. The shocking reality is; it has long lasting detrimental consequences that are similar to those of known addictive disorders.

Excessive computer use affects both the users and people around them. As a computer addict dedicates more time to his computer, he creates distance between him, friends, and family creating a non-natural world. The tendency of neglecting social gathering, intentionally missing meetings, and avoiding family members’ withers relationships. Addicts develop a habit of being annoyed when detached from the computer. They lack concentration even when they choose to associate with their friends. The tightly knit social ties eventually weaken, and the screen becomes the closest friend that the user adores.

Overdependence on the computer has serious physical damage. Repetitive stress injuries occur when a mouse and keyboard are in use daily for long hours. Since users spend plenty of the time on computer desks, they exhibit backbone related disorders. Majority of addicts extend to late night, cutting essential time for sleep. Inadequate sleep due to the late night causes drowsiness, severe headache, carpal tunnel syndrome, low level of concentration, and their immune system becomes depressed. Lack of enough exercise leads to general physical condition even worse, one may become overweight.

Among students, computer over dependence affects their academic performance. The youths are preoccupied with computer games and videos neglecting their school work. They substitute time meant for homework with playing computer games, surfing, and networking. While in school, they divert attention to think about games losing concentration on their academic performance. The computer is a possible breeding zone for crimes. It provides a variety of criminal opportunities for individuals who are readily available. These people would learn about opportunities available for them even if they were not aware of such crimes before.

Through a sequence of behavioral, cognitive, and social support, computer addiction is eradicated. For many addictions, total abstinence is an excellent treatment, however, commitment toward achieving an Internet usage level that strikes a healthy balance and abstaining from submissions that have proven to be tricky for the user is preferred.
