APA-Template-writing-guide-and-samplesAPA (American Psychological Association) style was developed by social and behavioral scientists to standardize scientific writing.

It is used for research reports, term papers, literature reviews, empirical studies,  methodological studies, case studies and theoretical articles.

General Guidelines

Formatting your paper in APA style means paying attention to mechanical details such as typeface, margins, line spacing and page headers.

  • Type your essay.
  • Use a clear font that is highly readable. APA recommends using 12 pt. Times New Roman font for the text of your manuscript and a sans serif typeface, as Arial, for figure labels.
  • Double-space your writing on standard-sized paper (8.5″ x 11″) with 1″ margins on all sides.
  • At the top of every page include a page header  (also known as the “running head”)
  • Insert page numbers flush right to create a page header/running head. Then type “YOUR PAPER’S TITLE” in the header flush left using all capital letters. The page header is a shortened version of the title of your paper and cannot exceed 50 characters including spacing and punctuation.

Paper Sections

APA research papers are divided into several sections. The main sections are:

  1. Title page
  2. Abstract
  3. Introduction
  4. Method
  5. Results
  6. Discussion
  7. References
  8. Appendices APA-Template-writing-guide-and-samples

Manuscript Format

When you submit your manuscript, number your pages consequently, starting with page 1. Use the following order.

  1. Title page (page 1)
  2. Abstract (page 2)
  3. Beginning of the text (page 3)
  4. References begin on a new page after the last page of text
  5. Each table begins on a new page after the References
  6. Each figure begins on a new page after the Tables
  7. Each appendix begins on a new page.

How to write an abstract

Your abstract should be one paragraph and should not exceed 120 words. It is a summary of the most important elements of your paper. All numbers in the abstract, except those beginning a sentence, should be typed as digits rather than words.  On the Tools menu click Word Count to count the number of words in this paragraph, select the paragraph.

Paper Title

Begin your paper with the introduction. It’s better to use active voice rather than passive.

This template is formatted according to APA Style guidelines, with one inch top, bottom, left, and right margins; Times New Roman font in 12 point; double-spaced; aligned flush left; and paragraphs indented 5-7 spaces. The page number appears one inch from the right edge on the first line of each page, excluding the Figures page.

Headings

Use headings and subheadings to organize the sections of your paper. The first heading level is formatted with initial caps and is centered on the page. Do not start a new page for each heading. Subheadings are formatted with italics and are aligned flush left.

Citations

Source material must be documented in the body of the paper by citing the authors and dates of the sources. The full source citation will appear in the list of references that follows the body of the paper. When the names of the authors of a source are part of the formal structure of the sentence, the year of the publication appears in parenthesis following the identification of the authors, for example, Brown (2001). When the authors of a source are not part of the formal structure of the sentence, both the authors and years of publication appear in parentheses, separated by semicolons, for example (Smith and Brown, 2003; Anderson, Charles, & Johnson, 2005).

Entries are organized alphabetically by surnames of first authors and are formatted with a hanging indent.

Bias Language

APA is committed to objectivity in specific reporting as well as fair treatment of groups and individuals. Long standing cultural practice can make a powerful influence on the most conscientious authors. These guidelines will help you to write with sensitivity and accuracy: acknowledge participation, describe at the appropriate level of specificity, be sensitive to labels.
