Advantages and disadvantages of computer for students
Education has evolved a great deal since the introduction of computers to the students. Computers in conjunction with the Internet and specialized training has impacted education considerably especially research areas. Though computers have exposed students to limitless information, it has both advantages and disadvantages.
Currently, with computers students can access a lot of valuable information concerning their research projects. There are some sites providing free access to academic resources to students. These sites include Khan’s Academy, Byte-Notes, Codecademy and the most popular Wikipedia. Research students, make their research relevant and of high quality with the use of related sites since they can compare what they are researching on to what other researchers are doing. Also, instead of doing one research with the same results, students can view what others have done in their research areas and focus on new ideas. These new thinking boosts research quality since focus on real life problems is enhanced. Students become much relevant to the society if they solve problems affecting the public.
Computers help students save time. Before the introduction of computers in various learning institutions, students had to go through large volumes of books and research journals to access the information they needed. Currently, with computers, students get their information just by a click. By saving time, students get enough time to do and understand their academic work. By understanding academic work, students’ performance improves significantly. This raises the quality of education in learning institutions.
Students become more creative with computers as compared to books only. With computers students learn programming languages such as C. By learning the programming languages, students create programs that are useful to companies or even the institutions they are learning. Also, with computers students see what others have created, hence, increasing students desire to create.
Despite the good of computers, machines are harmful too to the students. Use of computers without a primary purpose, by students, leads to time and energy wasting. Some students spend a substantial amount of time playing games on computers and chatting. Computer games take much time and energy of the students, making students have no time and energy for their studies. Also, some computer games influences how one thinks, e.g. violent/war computer games, make student violent. Spending time chatting with friends on social media, such as Facebook, Twitter, etc., make students lose a lot of their precious academic time. Spending long hours chatting and playing games also harm the eyes.
Students accidentally or willingly get access to prohibited sites, for example, pornographic sites. Pornographic sites poison students minds and may even lead to morally decayed students. With pornographic sites, students start viewing each other as a sexual tool.
In the classroom, students use computers to cheat in their homework, tests and research papers. Since almost all the information needed by the students is on the internet, students download and present solutions to their assignments as their solutions. Downloading and submitting an answer as yours leads to plagiarism. Plagiarism lowers students’ academic quality.
Computers are important to the students and care must be taken in handling them. Before using computers, students must define the purpose of using them to avoid energy and time wastages. The administrators of the networks should also block the unwanted sites; this makes students concentrate and focus on their academic work. The combination of interest, concentration on academic work, and computers cause the student realize good and quality academic grades.
